Sydney based TWS HIRE is one of the Australia’s largest suppliers of watercarts (water carts) to the construction and earthmoving industry.

Its equipment is used for site preparation by contractors in earthworks, in highway and road works, mine sites, local government, state government, infrastructure authorities, paving companies, landscape contractors, the film industry and special events.

Back in 1998 Gary Bastian was an owner operator of an excavation business. Starting with a skid steer loader and excavator on a compact tipper truck, he found ready work within the civil industry across the Sydney area.

With construction work in Sydney gathering pace in advance of the Olympic Games, Gary was hired on a twelve-month contract that included the need for a small watercart. He bought a truck and designed and fabricated a tank and pump system. Over time, he added design enhancements to make this first watercart more efficient.

A second watercart was needed, so he built a second unit with more advanced features such as extra sprayers and a more powerful pump, all packaged on a small cab chassis. He found that focusing on watercart hire was a sound strategy and as the reputation of ’The Watercart Specialists’ grew and demand increased, the fleet was expanded.

Gary, assisted by son Bill, built all pipework, valves and hose fittings to his design. Building water systems on the new trucks enabled Gary to fine tune the design to produce watercarts that were extremely efficient and easy for any person to operate.

A few years ago, for health reasons, Gary decided to pass on the reins of the business to a young and highly enthusiastic Bill.

“Having always been passionate about the watercart business, the challenge of having to run the business didn’t appear daunting and I felt more than ready to take on the task.  I took on responsibility for the business–its day-to-day operations and management.

“About two years into managing the business I had time to undertake a management course which was very helpful in expanding my management skills.

With the benefit of youth and a deep passion for making the business a success, Bill embarked on a program of innovations that included streamlining the office and administration functions; a change in focus to self-drive dry hire; installing and learning IT systems; upgrading accounting and financial systems as well as office administration, invoicing and debtor management.

Today, TWS HIRE fully services the construction industry with brand-new, drive-yourself automatic trucks that are fully compliant with all safety specifications and inspection compliant for use on public roads and all construction sites.
